Oral thrush treatment

There are a number of yeast species normally present in the mouth and in a healthy patient, these are in balance and cause no problem.

Immune defence:

With a damaged immune defence, there is a risk of developing a candida infection (oral candidiasis).

This is common in the beginning and the end of a life and with damaged immune defence, typically with HIV positive people when the disease changes into AIDS.

Under certain circumstances though, a candida overgrowth may occur and lead to oral candidiasis (oral thrush).

Oral candidiasis predispositions:

Treatment with antibiotics or steroids (inhalators for asthmatics)
Immunodepressive diseases like leukemia and Aids
Immunodepressive treatment (typically cancer treatment)
Mouth dryness from medical drugs, radiation treatment or disease
Diabetes mellitus, anemia, uremia

Oral candidiasis treatment

To treat oral candidiasis (thrush), first: remove predispositions if possible.

Second: A meticolous mouth hygiene (including cleaning of false teeth) is very important in order to stop the oral thrush infection. Brush teeth very carefully twice a day, use floss as well. In the case of false teeth - remove them during night.

Third: If the infection remains, it is time to consider antimycotic treatment and/or house cures of oral thrush. For house cures - they are much the same as for other thrush. Antimyotics are Mycostatin, Amfotericin-B (Fungizone) etc. Mycostatin is a mixture, kept in the mouth for a while before swallowing. Mycostatin is safe for older patients and in case of infections caused by other medical treatment. Fungizone comes as tablets, use for 1-2 weeks. If the skin around the mouth is affected as well, use an anti-fungal cream in combination.

Fourth: For severe cases - Fluconazol (Diflucan) for 1-2 weeks or as long as needed.
